Data Entry Requirements
Computer-based Summative ELPAC
The TE-generated scores of the computer-based Summative ELPAC Speaking domain may be entered directly into the DEI during the administration of the Speaking domain, or they may be entered on the Student Score Sheet—the back page of the DFA—and then transferred into the DEI after the test administration. If scores are not entered while the student is testing, enter Speaking scores immediately after testing and then securely destroy the Student Score Sheets.
Table 1 indicates when the DEI is required for the computer-based Summative ELPAC.
Grade Levels | Test Delivery | Domain | DEI Required? |
---|---|---|---|
K–2 | Computer-based | Listening and Reading | No, the TE will select the student’s responses in the TDS. |
K–2 | Computer-based | Speaking | Yes, the TE will enter scores in the DEI during or after the administration of the Speaking domain in the TDS. |
K–2 | Computer-based | Writing | No, the LEA will send the completed Writing Answer Book to ETS for scoring. |
3–12 | Computer-based | Listening, Reading, and Writing | No, students will enter the answers in the TDS. |
3–12 | Computer-based | Speaking | Yes, the TE will enter scores in the DEI during or after the administration of the Speaking domain in the TDS. |
General Instructions for Entering Scores for Computer-based Assessments in the DEI
This subsection describes the general instructions for entering scores in the DEI for the computer-based Summative ELPAC.
-
Refer to the Logging On to the DEI section of this chapter to log on to the DEI in preparation for entering scores. On the Available Tests screen, select the blue [Start Summative ELPAC Grades XX (Domain Name) - Online Data Entry Interface] button (refer to figure 1).
Figure 1. Available Tests screen
-
The Instructions and Help screen, shown in figure 2, is the same as the one that is used by a student taking a computer-based assessment.
Figure 2. Instructions and Help screen
- Select the [View Test Settings] button to review the test settings used by the student in the TDS and assigned in TOMS. Note that these cannot be changed in the DEI.
- Select the [View Help Guide] button for an overview of the buttons the user will encounter in the DEI; these are the same buttons and tools that a student encounters in the TDS. The guide is available on all screens by selecting the [Help] question mark [?] button in the top-right corner of any screen.
- Select the [Begin Data Entry] button to enter the scores for the domain, or select the [Go Back] button to exit.
-
The first item for scoring in the DEI will match the same first test question from the student secure browser or the Student Score Sheet (refer to figure 3). Follow the instructions and scripts in the DFA for the grade- and form-specific ELPAC domain while administering the test. The TE should refer to the rubrics provided in the DFA for scoring the student’s responses.

If the score is identified on the Student Score Sheet, refer to the DEI screen and select the appropriate radio button to score (“Score 0,” “Score 1,” “Score 2,” etc.) for that item (refer to figure 4).
Figure 4. DEI Score Entry screen
- After selecting the appropriate radio button for the score, select the [Next] button in the top-left corner of the DEI screen (indicated in figure 4) to continue to the next question.
-
Continue entering scores in the DEI in this manner. If the student had not responded to any questions or answered any questions correctly up to the stopping marker in the domain DFA, the TE may have stopped administering the domain.
During the administration of the Speaking domain, the TE should either mark the Student Score Sheet if the student was unable to continue after the stopping marker and so testing was completed for this domain; or, if scoring directly in the DEI, select the [Submit Test] button at the top of the screen. If this happens, the Attention message box (figure 5) will appear to advise the user that the user is ending the test and to select the [Yes] button (refer to figure 5). Select the [Yes] button to end the test; no more score entry is necessary at this point. Otherwise, select [Next] to continue entering scores.

- [Enter Responses for a Different Student] button—Return to the Logon screen to start the process over for a new student.
- Securely destroy all Student Score Sheets after scores have been entered in the DEI.
Summative ELPAC PPTs
Only students with documented accessibility needs or schools that require PPT materials because of an emergency should be testing on Summative ELPAC PPT emergency materials. To receive PPT emergency materials, an LEA ELPAC coordinator must complete and submit the CAASPP and ELPAC Special Request for Paper Exams web form. This request must be approved by the CDE prior to the LEA receiving PPT emergency materials.
When the Summative ELPAC PPT emergency form for K–12 students is administered, it is administered on Answer Books. The K–2 Answer Books must be returned to ETS for scoring, so there is no data entry required. Refer to the PPT Administration chapter of this manual for more information about returning PPT emergency form materials.
Table 2 indicates when the DEI is required for the Summative ELPAC PPT emergency form.
Grade Levels | Test Delivery | Domain | DEI Required? |
---|---|---|---|
K–2 | Emergency Paper–pencil | All domains | No, the LEA will send the completed Answer Book to ETS for scoring. |
3–12 | Emergency Paper–pencil | Listening, Reading, and Writing | Yes, the TE will enter the student’s responses into the DEI. |
3–12 | Emergency Paper–pencil | Speaking | Yes, the TE will enter the student’s scores into the DEI after the administration of the Speaking domain. |
