Lexile® and Quantile® Measures Reports

Feature Description
Purpose To report Lexile and Quantile measures based on the summative Smarter Balanced for ELA and mathematics scale scores, respectively, to parents/‌guardians, students, and teachers.
Format

The Lexile and Quantile Measures Report consists of one two-sided page:

  • Page 1
    • Student’s Lexile and Quantile measures
    • Descriptions of the Lexile and Quantile measure
    • Student information
  • Page 2
    • Resources to support reading
    • Resources to support mathematics
    • Sources of more information about Lexile and Quantile measures
Action LEAs can optionally distribute the copy of this report to parents/guardians.
Focus To provide an avenue for additional resources that support an individual student’s results for ELA and mathematics

Description

The SSR reporting Lexile and Quantile measures provides additional measures of students’ abilities in reading and mathematics. Lexile measures indicate students’ reading abilities, and Quantile measures indicate students’ readiness for instruction in mathematics.

Data presented for the Lexile and Quantile measures includes the following on each of the SSRs:

  • A Lexile measure for reading linked to the student’s Smarter Balanced for ELA scale score
  • A Quantile measure for mathematics linked to the student’s Smarter Balanced for Mathematics scale score

Example Measures Report

The Lexile and Quantile Measures Report features metrics for reading and mathematics that were calculated based on the student’s Smarter Balanced scale scores for ELA and mathematics, respectively. A Lexile measure indicates the difficulty of materials a student can read and understand independently. A Quantile measure shows what mathematical skills a student has mastered and in which skills the student needs additional instruction.

Lexile and Quantile measures can be used by parents/guardians at the web addresses on the report to identify suitable books to support the student’s reading level; and activities and other resources to support the student’s mathematics knowledge and skill.

# Feature Description
1 Student identification This area shows the student’s residential address as listed in CALPADS.
2 Student and school information

This area shows information about the student and the school and LEA name, as well as the county/district/‌school code.

Note: The grade noted indicates the grade level in which the student was enrolled at the start of testing.

3 Measures overview This paragraph provides an overview of the Lexile and Quantile measures.

Table 2. The Lexile and Quantile Report: Measures Overview Descriptions

# Feature Description
1 Lexile and Quantile measures This section features the number representing the Lexile measure for reading and the number representing the Quantile measure for mathematics. The higher the number, the stronger the student’s reading or mathematical performance. Note that results starting with “BR” indicate a beginning reader’s Lexile measure; and results starting with “EM” indicate an emerging mathematician’s Quantile measure.
2 Special condition

The same cautionary message that could appear on the student’s Smarter Balanced SSR also will be included under the progress summary for one of the following reasons:

  • Invalidate Appeal
  • Student did not answer enough questions for scoring so received the LOSS
  • Student had an unlisted resource that changes the construct being measured
3 Results overview This area provides a description of the Lexile and Quantile measures.
