Initial ELPAC for Grades Three Through Twelve (3–12)

Students Control the Web-based Student Testing Interface

The Initial ELPAC domains of Reading, Writing, and Listening for students in grades three through twelve can be completed in an individual or multiple-student session. The test session should not contain more than four students, allowing test examiners (TEs) to monitor all students with minimal distraction during the assessment. Students will need to have a web camera turned on, so TEs can ensure that it is the student who is completing the assessment.

Take the following steps to manage a remote session where one or more students will run the web-based Student Testing Interface on their devices:

  1. Access a copy of the appropriate Directions for Administration (DFA).
  2. Open a video meeting with the student or students.
  3. Have all students—no more than four—turn on their web cameras and leave them on for the entire session, so TEs can see each student and the room immediately surrounding each student. Students may not use any of the background features to obscure a view of the room.
  4. Log on to the Test Administrator Interface.
  5. Select the assessment(s) that will be used for the current session.
  6. Respond to the dialog boxes to start the session.
  7. Copy the link to the web-based Student Testing Interface on the Session Information screen.
  8. Provide the copied link to the web-based Student Testing Interface to the students and ask that students go to the website.
  9. Note that the copied link will have the session ID prepopulated. If students need the session ID, the session ID can be shared verbally or in a chat box of the video meeting.
  10. Have students log on to the web-based Student Testing Interface using the students’ first names as they appear in the Test Operations Management System (TOMS), their Statewide Student Identifiers (SSIDs), and the session ID.
  11. Instruct the student or students on the steps needed to select the proper assessment.
  12. Confirm accessibility resources for each student and then approve entry into the assessment.
  13. Monitor the progression of each student through the assessment using the Test Administrator Interface (DEI).
  14. Monitor each student taking the assessment by watching the video feed, being alert for others in the room providing answers or an indication that a student might be using a device, such as a cell phone, out of sight of the web camera.
  15. At the end of the test session, confirm that each student has submitted or paused the assessment.
  16. Stop the session in the Test Administrator Interface by selecting the [Stop Session] stop sign icon.
  17. Log off the Test Administrator Interface.
  18. Log on to the Teacher Hand Scoring System (THSS) to score the Writing responses. (Refer to the instructions in the 2020–2021 Initial ELPAC Online Test Administration Manual.)

TE Controls the Web-based Student Testing Interface for the Reading, Listening, and Writing Domain

For grades three through twelve, TEs should control the web-based Student Testing Interface only with a student who has the designated support of Designated Interface Assistant assigned. Because the student is tested one on one, multiple students cannot be tested during this type of session.

Take the following steps to manage a remote session where the web-based Student Testing Interface will be run on the TE’s device:

  1. Access a copy of the appropriate DFA.
  2. Open a video meeting with the student.
  3. Have the student turn on a web camera and leave it on for the entire session, so TEs can see the student and the room immediately surrounding the student.
  4. Log on to the Test Administrator Interface.
  5. Select the assessment that will be used for the current session.
  6. Respond to the dialog boxes to start the session.
  7. Copy the link to the web-based Student Testing Interface on the Session Information screen.
  8. Use a second tab or incognito window (recommended) and paste the copied link or go to the web-based Student Testing Interface.
  9. Log on to the web-based Student Testing Interface using the student’s first name as it appears in TOMS, the student’s SSID, and the session ID.
  10. Use the applications in both web browser tabs to move through the assessment selection and approval process.
  11. Confirm the accessibility resources for the student and then approve the assessment.
    1. To assist the student with locating the cursor, it is suggested that TEs change the mouse pointer designated support to extra-large prior to entering the assessment. This will allow the student to see the mouse pointer more easily on the screen.
    2. At the point of approving the student into the Initial ELPAC, TEs have the ability to modify accessibility resources by selecting the [Details] eye icon and changing the mouse pointer to a larger size.
  12. Once the first question of the assessment is visible, share the web-based Student Testing Interface screen with the student.
  13. Work each question with the student, entering the answer on the TE’s device.
  14. At the end of the test session, select the [End Test] button to submit the test.
  15. Log off the web-based Student Testing Interface.
  16. Stop the session in the Test Administrator Interface by selecting the [Stop Session] stop sign icon.
  17. Log off the Test Administrator Interface.
  18. Initial ELPAC Writing Domain only: TEs can log on to the THSS to score the Writing responses. (Refer to the instructions in the 2020–2021 Initial ELPAC Online Test Administration Manual.)

TE Controls the Web-based Student Testing Interface for the Speaking Domain

Because the student is tested one-on-one, multiple students cannot be tested during this type of session.

Take the following steps to manage a remote session where the web-based Student Testing Interface will be run on the TE’s device:

  1. Accesses a copy of the appropriate DFA.
  2. Open a video meeting with the student.
  3. Have the student turn on a web camera and leave it on for the entire session, so TEs can see the student and the room immediately surrounding the student.
  4. Log on to the Test Administrator Interface. TEs may also have the DEI open.
  5. Select the assessment that will be used for the current session.
  6. Respond to the dialog boxes to start the session.
  7. Start a test session (selecting In Person) and turn on the camera in the Test Administrator Interface.
  8. Copy the link to the web-based Student Testing Interface on the Session Information screen.
  9. Use a second tab or incognito window (recommended) and paste the copied link or go to the web-based Student Testing Interface.
  10. Log on to the web-based Student Testing Interface using the student’s first name as it appears in TOMS, the student’s SSID, and the session ID.
  11. Use the applications in the web browser tabs to move through the assessment selection and approval process.
  12. Confirm accessibility resources for the student and then approve the assessment.
  13. Once the first question of the assessment is visible, share the web-based Student Testing Interface screen with the student.
  14. When administering the Speaking domain, have the student respond to the question using the microphone on the student’s device.
  15. Enter scores for each item either directly in the DEI or on the student score sheet.
  16. Move to the next question and repeat steps 12 and 13 until the assessment is completed.
  17. At the end of the test session, select the [End Test] button to submit the test.
  18. Log off the web-based Student Testing Interface.
  19. Stop the session in the Test Administrator Interface by selecting the [Stop Session] stop sign icon.
  20. Log off the Test Administrator Interface.
  21. Log on to the DEI and enter the scores for the Speaking domain if the scores were noted on the score sheet during the live assessment.
